This company is built to provide solutions to the daily real world challenges in a dealership. The idea of the Automotive Controller Academy is to teach methods and best practices on how to handle the responsibilities we face every day. Its concept is centered on the fact that while basic knowledge is taught in college, no one prepares our Controller’s for many of the important tasks, the management of employees or systems that employees are expected to know! Once an employee get hired it’s too late to tell the boss that they have never been taught much of what they need to know, and the first time you figure it out is when something has gone terribly wrong.
This is a crazy way to run a business, let alone a career, but we all know in the hectic environment of a dealership this is often the only “training” one receives. This might have been fine 20 years ago before all the regulations and complicated DMS systems integration that came along with the maturing of the industry. When a dealership was a Mom and Pop dealerships selling 50 to 100 cars with little regulation and green ledger accounting perhaps learning on the job was enough. Now, move into the present day. The standalone dealership has grown into a multi-million dollar businesses with high risk and high turnover of personnel being managed by employees whose training was based on a random rise through the ranks of various other dealerships with uncertain degrees of expertise and training. Add to that the Automotive dealership is complicated by Federal and State regulation, manufacturer programs and requirements, banking industry regulation, Internet integration and new systems that interface with the local and state governments.
The industry’s so called “training program” for controllers and office staff has been for people to bounce from job to job trying to accumulate enough experience to become an expert in the field. Of course since that knowledge was acquired “On The Job”, it all depends on what that Controller got out of it and “if” they got it from someone who actually had the experience to teach it. Unfortunately, rarely does a Controller or Office Manager get the proper training required to be successful because of time constraints and up until now no available training paths focused on real world dealership specific training for this essential position. As we know, dealership employees are all too busy just trying to make it through the day. Every other industry – even the burger flipping hamburger joints have process and procedures to service their customers and train their staff – think about it – what onboarding do you currently provide to new employees? What do you really know about the experience of the people you are putting in charge of your money? Don’t you think it’s time you required them to spend a day with an expert in the field of Controllership? Shouldn’t it be a requirement to set out a proper set of standards to an employee who manages one of your most crucial departments?
When exactly do you think the Controller received all this training you are holding them accountable for? Have you sent them for “any training” yourself recently?
We created this program to allow Dealers and Controllers to have a resource for training themselves and their office staff. The most relevant big Automotive Industry training leader’s focus on the Dealer candidates or the upper management in the sales and service departments, but no one is focusing on your money managers, the Controller. We meet that need. We teach them what no one took the time to and provide them a resource that they didn’t previously have. We clarify the rules and the methods they should be using to best manage their team, the balance sheet and schedules and how to take responsibility for the income statement. We give them a place to turn to even after the class is over to get real answers to real time questions about the responsibilities they face every day. We help make them successful, we make your investment in time and training a successful one, because a trained, long term employee will increase your bottom line, every time.
